Information on Nurseries and the benefits of working within the Nursery framework is provided below.

Nurseries

UK nurseries provide care for children aged 3 months to 5 years of age. Most nurseries are split into rooms:

  • Baby room (3 - 18 months)
  • Toddler room (18 months - 2.5 years)
  • Pre-school room (2.5 - 5 years)

Each room should work to certain ratios of carers to children. Nurseries are usually run by a Manager and Deputy Manager and each room should have a Team Leader.

Nursery Workers

Nursery workers are required to work within the framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage - in order to provide consistency in play, care and general child development. Here is a summary of the requirements of a nursery worker:

  • Baby room - provide a safe and stimulating environment, change nappies, feeds, keep the baby clean, follow sleep routines.
  • Toddler and Pre-school room - play, educate, plan activities, keep the children safe and clean, feedback to parents.

Nursery workers are made up of qualified Nursery Nurses, Nursery Assistants and often college students gaining work experience.

Nursery Workers

  • Nursery work helps newly qualified childcarers to gain valuable experience and confidence working in a live environment.
  • Working as part of a team means that support is constantly at hand, you can make friends more easily and are around people all the time.
  • You will quickly learn which age groups of children you prefer working with.
  • The hours are set.
  • Additional work may be available with some of the parents (babysitting etc).
  • If you don't drive, a nursery is a great option.
  • You will be exposed to different career options e.g. management, teaching and much more.
